Designed for DesignWITH as a part of a research project for the Toronto Center of Learning and Development which aimed to develop new products that could be manufactured from home using a cottage industry logic. The individuals that would produce the objects already had the skill of sewing, so it felt that the project should ultilize this existing skill.

How could we integrate new materials into textile design to evoke new solutions? Air Basket was a product which aimed to make use of a simple hand tube bender, cheap and easily used from home. With this tool, easily making repeatable bends in an aluminum tube was possible. The Air Basket evolved through the context of a coat rack, or door handle that double as places to hang scarves, hats, and other items it isn’t necessarily suited for.

What if you could hang a basket, which could then serve to be a more suitable place for these small items around doorways? Air Basket, through the use of aluminum and a thick felt, is a simple
solution to this prompt. The product aims to expose the opportuni-ties that may arise through a non traditional connection of materi-
als and processes.
